Let's have a look at the popular reasons behind acne skin. I will also explain why some natural products are suitable for acne and offer three routines to help to keep acne under control.

Knowing acne

Acne is a widespread problem, and it doesn't affect only teenagers. Research shows that between 15% - 40% of adults over 25 are suffering from acne, and the number is on the rise.

The reasons for adult acne are fundamentally rooted in the way of life.
Some of the factors are increased stress, not enough exercise, poor diet, hormonal issues and harsh chemicals in cosmetics products.

And of course, the environment you live also plays a significant role in skin condition.

Let's dig a little deeper into these common causes.

Stress-related acne

It seems that being stressed is a new normal. Life has changed so much that we are so used to worries that we forgot how to be calm and enjoy the happy moments.

Stress alters the balance in our bodies by increasing the levels of steroid hormones and certain inflammatory factors which causes your pimples to flare-up.

Once, the skin gets worse, stress skyrockets which will lead to a whirlpool of emotions affecting how the skin behaves and look. 

Tip: Take care of your hormones. Relax and keep emotions under control as it will help decrease cortisol. Get rid of sugar and dairy because both raise androgen levels which cause acne. Eat a lot of fibres and beets to keep your liver happy. Why don't you try yoga? It is excellent for managing anxiety and tension.

Exercise and diet

Do you know that many dermatologists now point out that a proper diet and regular activities are helping in decreasing acne? It wasn't like that before, but many recent studies show a connection between healthy skin and food.

Processed foods with a high glycemic index (GI) are proven to worsen acne conditions. On the other hand, leafy greens can improve acne skin and decrease the amounts of zits and blackheads. Instead of munching chips, biscuits, crackers, you can choose nuts, carrots or apples.

Physical activity of any kind will assist in reducing the pimples as regular exercises stabilise the levels of glucose and hormones.

Daily activities reduce the excess body fat, which diminishes the adrenal hormones, which are the actual triggers of acne.

Tip: Fizzy drinks, beer, fruit juices, white bread, white rice, packed supermarket food, biscuits, chips, crackers are acne triggers. Choose home-cooked food, fresh fruits, brown rice, plenty of water, nuts, leafy greens and veggies. Eat the rainbow of fresh vegetables and fruits and results will start to show! 

Beauty products

Are you reading the labels when you're choosing a beauty product? If you are suffering from acne, you must learn about the good and bad ingredients in the creams, toners, face washes and everything you use on your skin.

Educate yourself about the harmful and beneficial ingredients. Also, you should know that ingredients are listed by their amounts, from the largest to the smallest. 

Toxic components can cause extreme irritations, and you should avoid them at all costs.

Tip: Some of the most harmful ingredients everyone (not only people with acne issues) should avoid are: parabens, formaldehyde, phthalates, triethanolamine, diethanolamine, Diazolidinyl urea and imidazolidinyl urea, sodium lauryl sulfate/Laureth sulfate; ammonium Laureth sulphate, propylene glycol, PVP/VA Copolymer, nanoparticles, synthetic fragrance, triclosan, toluene, sunscreen chemicals.

Anti-Acne Ingredients 

Some ingredients are proven to help acne skin by reducing irritations and inflammations, handing sebum levels and declogging the pores. 

Here are some popular oils, hydrosols and clays which are found to help acne skin conditions.


Clay & fullers earth 

Extremely helpful in reducing the oil secretion by absorbing sebum when used for a long time. You can try using a face mask containing either of it once or twice a week. 

Aloe Vera (extract)

A tropical evergreen succulent which traditionally is used to help treat inflammations and dry skin. Aloe encourages cell renewal because of its enzymes which assist in skin exfoliation. Research shows that using aloe gel, twice a day alongside with an anti-acne medicine, improves acne by about 35%.

Turmeric (oil)

It is antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antifungal and anti-oxidant. Softens the skin and improves acne conditions. 

Tea-tree (oil)

My personal preference.

Tea-tree oil can be as effective as benzoyl peroxide for acne. It controls the acne without affecting the healthy skin flora. It is anti-inflammatory. Be careful if your skin is sensitive as it can cause irritations.

Use it on red pimples if your skin is not prone to inflammations.

Jojoba (oil)

Use it in combination with clay, and you will notice significant results in reducing mild to moderate acne. 

Green tea (extract)

With its anti-bacterial properties, green tea extract reduces oil production, which controls the sebum levels. It is full of anti-oxidants and protects the skin from environmental pollutants. 

Rosa Damascena (hydrosol)

When used as a facial toner, rose water is one of the most celebrated in the world. Great for sensitive skin, it reduces the irritations and redness. It protects the skin from damage, and it is used in creams, lotions and toners to enhance effectiveness. 

Roman chamomile (extract, oil or hydrosol) 

All forms of Roman chamomile have anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-ageing properties and are very helpful in treating acne.

Hydrosol is used instead of water as it increases efficacy. Extract soothes sensitive skin and calms irritations and redness.

Oil is usually used in a  low percentage in creams and face oil to help acne. 

Ginger (hydrosol)

Full of anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatories, ginger hydrosol, can be used undiluted to replace water as it improves products effectiveness.

Particularly useful in facial cleansers and toners to treat oily and acne-prone skin.

Skincare regimes for Acne

Do you have regular acne breakouts? How much time can you allow to take care of your face? What products can help to keep things under control? 

Choose your skincare regime and follow it. You can switch at any time of your acne gets better or worse. 


This basic routine is for everyone with acne-prone skin which doesn't have any current acne breakout. Just use a face wash that will keep oil secretion under control, and your skin is neither oily or dry.

Make a routine of using an acne face mask once or twice a day and if a breakout starts, switch to advanced or expert acne regime.


If you don't have time or money, this advanced, yet simple acne regime would help you out. 

  1. Wash your face minimum twice a day.
  2. Apply anti-acne lotion or spot treatment at night, after washing your face.  
  3. Apply an anti-acne face mask once or twice a week.


If you have both time and money, this expert acne regime will help you out to take care of acne breakouts. 


  1. Wash your face and pat dry.
  2. Spray some rose water on it.
  3. Apply anti-acne toner whenever your face feels oily or greasy.

At night: 

  1. Wash your face.
  2. Apply anti-acne lotion or spot treatment.


  1. Scrub your face once / twice a week
  2.  Apply an anti-acne face mask once or twice a week. 

Be positive and start small

Acne can make you feel depressed and has a massive impact on your social life. The truth is, you're not alone. There are so many people suffering from breakouts every single day. You can start taking small steps to change your lifestyle.

For example, cut the fizzy drinks and add a bit more salads every day. Start your exercise routine by doing yoga or pilates once or twice a week. 

Feel good about yourself. A healthy lifestyle will lift your mood, and you will start feeling energised, your mind will clear up. 

Whatever the grade of your acne, you should know that following a skincare regime and changing diet will have a positive impact. 

Just don't give up. It can take a little while until results start to show up, but you'll get there. 


Please, be aware that some of the essential oils are not suitable for use during pregnancy. Always do a patch test of a new product.
